Send out the first invitation six to eight weeks before the event. Sending it too early (more than ten weeks in advance) is counterproductive: people will forget about it. Sending it too late (less than three weeks in advance) means people’s schedules are already full.
For large internal events: mark the date on the calendar three months in advance, and send out the official invitation with program details four to six weeks before the event. For external client events, four to six weeks is the standard.
