What is the difference between a "save the date" and an invitation?

A "save the date" is the very first announcement: short, eye-catching, and intended solely to reserve the date. No program, no registration link—just: save this date.

The invitation will be sent out 2–3 weeks later with all the details: what, when, where, who it’s for, why, and how to register. A reminder will be sent out 1–2 weeks before the event to those who haven’t responded yet.
