You should address an ambassador as “Your Excellency.” This applies in both Dutch and English (“Your Excellency”). At a formal reception, embassy staff will inform you of specific protocol requirements. Ambassadors are usually accompanied by a protocol officer from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Train your host team on the correct form of address and ensure that everyone who comes into contact with the ambassador is aware of this. Using the wrong form of address is not a major incident, but it is avoidable.
